Key takeaways:

  • Carnegie Mellon University and Texas A&M conducted air monitoring to test for chemical contamination
  • The researchers found levels of at least one chemical, acrolein, that could pose longer-term concern and warrants additional monitoring
  • The researchers have recommended that the EPA conduct additional testing for acrolein, as well as other chemicals, to ensure the safety of the residents

Residents of East Palestine, Ohio have reported worrying health symptoms in the weeks since a train derailment and chemical fire occurred in the area. In response, a team of researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and Texas A&M conducted air monitoring to test for chemical contamination.

The researchers found levels of at least one chemical, acrolein, that could pose longer-term concern and warrants additional monitoring. The levels of benzene and vinyl chloride tested below levels of concern for intermediate exposures.

The US Environmental Protection Agency gave the all clear for residents to return home shortly after the February 3 derailment and controlled burn. However, the researchers have urged the EPA to continue to monitor the area for any additional chemical contamination.

The researchers have also recommended that the EPA conduct additional testing for acrolein, as well as other chemicals, to ensure the safety of the residents. They have also suggested that the EPA provide additional resources to the community to help with the cleanup and to monitor for any potential health effects.

The residents of East Palestine are still dealing with the aftermath of the train derailment and chemical fire, and the researchers hope that their findings will help to ensure the safety of the community.
