A former South Carolina attorney, Alex Murdaugh, was accused of murdering his family at their rural hunting property in 2021. On Wednesday, prosecutors summarized Murdaugh as a selfish and conniving liar who has repeatedly portrayed himself as a victim in order to cover up his alleged misdeeds.

During closing arguments, lead prosecutor Creighton Waters said Murdaugh was desperate and “running out of options” when he fatally shot his family as a means to steer attention away from his mounting financial crimes and drug addiction. Waters said Murdaugh was not worried about his surviving son, Buster, after the murder of his family because he was “the only threat.” He said in one police interview, law enforcement directly asked Murdaugh if there were any threats to Buster, to which he replied “no.”

Murdaugh’s law partners testified he was “not overly concerned” about figuring out what happened to his wife, Maggie, or son, Paul. Waters said Murdaugh was desperate to stay afloat and resorted to begging for money.

The jury will now decide if Murdaugh is guilty of the charges against him, which include murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. If convicted, Murdaugh could face life in prison without parole. The trial is expected to conclude this week.
