Special Counsel Jack Smith Subpoenas Former Vice President Mike Pence in Connection with Trump Investigations

The Justice Department has appointed Special Counsel Jack Smith to lead the investigations into former President Donald Trump’s role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and the mishandling of classified government records found at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida last year. Sources have now revealed that Smith has subpoenaed former Vice President Mike Pence in connection with the inquiry.

The subpoena of Pence comes as no surprise, as he was famously critical of Trump’s actions around the Jan. 6 attack and dismissed his claims that Democrats had rigged the 2020 election in Joe Biden’s favor. It is not yet known what information Smith is seeking from Pence.

In December, NBC News reported that Smith had subpoenaed local officials in key presidential battleground states, including Pennsylvania and Michigan, as part of the investigation into Trump’s handling of classified documents. Smith has also been investigating the former president’s role in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

The Justice Department appointed Smith in November to take over its investigations into Trump’s role in the Jan. 6 attack and into the mishandling of classified government records. ABC News was the first to report that Pence had been subpoenaed. It is unclear what other individuals may have been subpoenaed as part of the inquiry.
