The family of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who died after a traffic stop in Memphis, Tennessee, has released the results of an independent autopsy. The findings indicate that Nichols “suffered extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating,” according to family attorney Benjamin Crump.

The family and legal team viewed footage of the arrest this month, which showed Nichols being beaten by police for three minutes. “It was an unadulterated, unabashed, non-stop beating of this young boy for three minutes,” attorney Antonio Romanucci said during a news conference Monday.

“What I saw on the video today was horrific,” said Rodney Wells, Nichols’ stepfather. “No father, mother should have to witness what I saw today. He was defenseless the entire time.”

Crump noted that the observed injuries are consistent with what the family and attorneys witnessed on the video. He said that more information would be released “at another time.”

The death of Tyre Nichols has sparked outrage in Memphis and beyond. The family and their legal team are calling for a full investigation into the incident and for the officers involved to be held accountable.
