Embattled Representative George Santos (R-NY) was assigned to two House committees this week, despite calls for his resignation from both Democrats and Republicans. This comes after allegations that Santos had misrepresented himself in order to gain a pension and health care for life.

Gregory Morey, a former roommate of Santos, told CBS News in an interview that Santos had expressed his desire to be in Congress for a single term in order to get a pension and health care for the rest of his life. Under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS), a full pension is available to members 62 years of age only after 5 years of service, for members 50 years or older after 20 years of service or members of any age after 25 years of service.

Santos has acknowledged that he had “embellished” his resume but added that he did nothing “criminal.” Despite the allegations, Santos was still assigned to the Committee on Small Business and the Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

The controversy surrounding Santos has sparked a debate over the ethics of misrepresentation in politics. While some argue that Santos should be held accountable for his actions, others believe that he should be given a chance to prove himself.

The future of Santos’s political career remains uncertain. While he has been assigned to two House committees, it is unclear if he will be able to remain in office or if he will be forced to resign. It is up to the voters to decide whether or not they will continue to support him.
