Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) announced his candidacy for the Arizona U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) on Monday. Gallego, who is of Mexican descent, would become the first Latino senator in the state if elected in 2024.

In a video posted online, Gallego highlighted his humble beginnings as the son of an immigrant single mother and his journey to Harvard, Iraq with the Marines, and Congress. He also made a reference to the criticism that Sinema is most at home with special interest groups and wealthy donors, saying “If you’re more likely to be meeting with the powerful than the powerless, you’re doing this job incorrectly.”

Gallego emphasized his commitment to fighting for working families and giving every Arizonan the same chance at the American Dream. “As a Marine, I never back down from a fight and in the Senate, I’ll fight to make sure every Arizonan has the same chance that I had at the American Dream,” he said in a statement.

The Arizona Senate race is expected to be one of the most competitive in the country. Gallego has already launched videos in English and Spanish to promote his candidacy and draw a contrast with Sinema. He has also received endorsements from several prominent Democrats, including Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX).

Gallego’s campaign is focused on giving a voice to working families and ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. “There is no lobbyist for working families,” he said. “In the Senate, I’ll fight to make sure every Arizonan has the same chance that I had at the American Dream.”
