Virginia Senator Tim Kaine announced on Friday that he will be running for a third term in 2024. Kaine, who is currently 64 years old, has been in politics for 30 years and is younger than many of his Senate colleagues.

Kaine said he had been mulling the decision for a while, as it would mean an eight-year commitment. He said he made the decision to run for reelection just last week.

“Grappling with an eight-year decision at age 64 is different than at age 53 or 42,” Kaine said at a Friday morning event in Richmond.

Kaine’s announcement comes as Democrats prepare for an extremely tough Senate map with several incumbents up for reelection in red states. President Biden, who is likely to announce his own reelection bid soon after the State of the Union address next month, is 16 years older than Kaine and is the oldest man in history to hold the office.

Kaine said he has been honored to serve people as a missionary, civil rights lawyer, and elected official at the local, state, and federal levels. He said he looks forward to continuing to serve the people of Virginia for another term.
