Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva has joined a chorus of accusations against the country’s security forces, as questions mount on how protesters were able to breach government buildings and wreak havoc inside over the weekend.
On Monday, Lula said during a meeting with governors that the Brasilia police and intelligence had neglected the attack threat. He also noted that footage showed police officers talking to the attackers, which he said indicated an “explicit connivance” of the police with the demonstrators.
The protests, which were in support of the far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro, saw demonstrators besieging the Supreme Court, presidential palace, and Congress on Sunday. The protesters called for the military to intervene, and the rallying cry of “No amnesty!” was heard throughout the streets of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.
Bety Amin, a 61-year-old therapist, was one of the protesters in Sao Paulo. “These people need to be punished, the people who ordered it need to be punished, those who gave money for it need to be punished,” she said. Amin wore a shirt with the word “DEMOCRACY” stretched across the back.
