Bryan Christopher Kohberger, 28, the suspect arrested in connection with the murders of four University of Idaho students, is expected to waive his extradition hearing this week, his attorney said. Kohberger’s family released a statement Sunday, pledging to “let the legal process unfold and as a family we will love and support our son and brother.”

According to Jason LaBar, the chief public defender for Monroe County, Pennsylvania, Kohberger is “eager to be exonerated” of the charges. LaBar added that the suspect was “very aware, but calm, and really shocked by his arrest” when the two spoke for about an hour on Friday.

The arrest comes nearly seven weeks after the victims were found stabbed to death in an off-campus home on November 13. An FBI surveillance team tracked Kohberger for four days before his arrest while law enforcement worked with prosecutors to develop enough probable cause to obtain a warrant. The DNA was run through a public database to find potential family member matches, and subsequent investigative work by law enforcement led to his identification as the suspect.

Kohberger is expected to face four counts of first-degree murder and burglary for allegedly breaking into the Moscow, Idaho, home with the intent to commit a felony. Latah County prosecuting attorney Bill Thompson said that the probable cause affidavit – which details the factual basis of Kohberger’s charges – is sealed until the suspect is physically in Latah County and has been served with the Idaho arrest warrant.
