Russian missile and drone strikes killed at least nine people across Ukraine, including four in Kyiv, as officials reported fires, blackouts and damaged apartment buildings. The assault followed warnings from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Moscow was preparing a major attack.

Two former fighters of the Russian private military company Wagner have spoken to CNN about their experiences on the battlefield in eastern Ukraine, where they described horrific losses in “first wave” assaults reminiscent of World War I. Ukrainian forces have responded to the shelling with counterattacks, and have managed to down five drones and capture two former Wagner fighters. Despite the shelling, officials in Kyiv said that Moscow is having trouble launching its large-scale offensive in the east of the country.

The attack was part of a series of attacks across Ukraine, with 26 people still trapped in the rubble. The Ukrainian military has accused Russia of launching a “large-scale offensive” against the country, and the United Nations Security Council is expected to discuss the situation on Monday.
