Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a New Year's Eve address to his country, just one week after his first trip outside Ukraine since the war began to the U.S. to meet with President Joe Biden. The war between Ukraine and Russia has been ongoing since 2014, with the death toll from the Russian attack on New Year’s Eve rising to at least three. President Zelenskyy urged his people to “hold on the best we can” and expressed hope that 2023 will bring peace and stability to the country with the Senate debating an additional $40 billion in aid for Ukraine.

President Joe Biden has granted pardons to six people with convictions on a murder charge and drug- and alcohol-related crimes, including an 80-year-old woman convicted of killing her abusive husband and a man who pleaded guilty to a cocaine transaction in the 1970s. Biden has shown a commitment to second chances, pardoning thousands of people convicted of "simple possession" of marijuana and commuting the sentences of 75 others.
President Joe Biden has issued six full pardons to individuals who have completed their sentences and become active in their communities since their release. These pardons include five people convicted of drug or alcohol offenses, and one woman convicted of murdering a husband she said abused her. The White House said Biden was a believer in second chances and that those he pardoned had “demonstrated a commitment to improving their communities and the lives of those around them.” This is the first of many pardons Biden has issued, including a wide-ranging pardon for all prior federal offenses of simple marijuana possession.
