A hurricane watch has been issued for parts of the northeast United States and Canada, stretching from Stonington, Maine to the U.S.-Canadian border. A tropical storm watch has also been issued for parts of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Rhode Island, Maine and Massachusetts, including Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. The hurricane is expected to bring heavy rainfall and coastal flooding to the region on Friday night and Saturday, with the potential for life-threatening flooding late Friday and Saturday.

Eleven Visitors Injured After Wooden Walkway to Doubling Point Lighthouse Collapses in Arrowsic, Maine

Eleven visitors were injured when the wooden walkway leading to the Doubling Point Lighthouse in Arrowsic, Maine collapsed on Saturday. Five of the injured were taken to a local hospital, while the other six were evaluated on the scene. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, and the Bath Fire Department is urging visitors to take extra caution when visiting lighthouses and other historic sites.

Suspect Taken Into Custody in Connection with Long-Unsolved Gilgo Beach Murders in Long Island, New York

Authorities have taken Rex Heuermann, 59, of Massapequa Park, into custody as a suspect in the long-unsolved murders of at least 10 women on Gilgo Beach in Long Island, New York. Billy Baldwin, the younger sibling of actor Alec Baldwin, went to high school with Heuermann. Heuermann is facing charges of second-degree murder and could face life in prison if found guilty. The investigation into the Gilgo Beach murders is ongoing.

Rare Solar Storm Brings Northern Lights to 17 States Across the United States

A rare solar storm is bringing the northern lights to 17 states in the United States, including Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Maryland. The best time to view the northern lights is at night, between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time, and away from the lights of a city. Cities such as Helena, Montana; Montpelier, Vermont; Minneapolis and Milwaukee are expected to have “highly active auroral displays” visible overhead.

Maine Woman Fights Off Bear Attack, Injuring Her Wrist in the Process

Lynn Kelly, 64, of Porter, Maine, successfully defended her dog from a bear attack on Friday afternoon by punching the bear in the nose. The bear bit her right hand, puncturing her wrist, but she was able to fight it off and it quickly fled. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is urging people to take precautions when in bear country and to carry bear spray. Kelly is currently recovering from her injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

Auburn Police Seize $3 Million Worth of Fentanyl in Surprise Shipment

Employees of an Auburn, Maine restaurant were surprised to find a plastic tote containing 14 kilograms (31 pounds) of the powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl in a crate they thought was a shipment of mugs. The estimated street value of the drugs is $3 million. The Auburn Police Department is working with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency to investigate the source of the shipment and is urging anyone with information to contact them.

Army Announces Mandatory Aviation Stand-Down After Two Fatal Helicopter Crashes

The U.S. Army has announced a mandatory aviation stand-down in response to two fatal helicopter crashes in the last month, which killed three soldiers in Alaska and seven in Kentucky. The stand-down will require all Army aviators, except those participating in critical missions, to complete the required training in order to ensure the safety of aviators and prevent future accidents. The Army is conducting an investigation into both crashes to determine the cause.
