Record-Breaking Cold Snap Hits Northeast, Causing at Least One Death

This weekend, the Northeast experienced a record-breaking cold snap, with temperatures reaching 47 degrees below zero at Mount Washington in New Hampshire and wind chill temperatures reaching 108 degrees below zero. Unfortunately, the cold temperatures have already caused at least one death, when a tree branch fell on a vehicle driven by a 23-year-old Connecticut woman. The National Weather Service has warned residents to take precautions against the cold weather and stay indoors.

This record is believed to beat the US record of minus 105° F in Alaska, and the cold spell is expected to ease up in the coming days. Residents of the Northeast are advised to stay indoors and bundle up if they must go outside.

Tragically, a 23-year-old mother sustained serious injuries and her infant was killed when a tree was knocked down by the winds. The National Weather Service has warned of “once-in-a-generation” wind chills and advised people to stay indoors and dress in layers to protect against frostbite and hypothermia.

Tragedy Strikes Mount Hakuba Norikura: Two Skiers, Including American Pro Freeskier, Die in Avalanche

An avalanche on Mount Hakuba Norikura in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, on Sunday afternoon resulted in the death of two skiers, one of whom was an American pro freeskier. The other three skiers were unharmed, and the cause of the avalanche is still under investigation. The Nagano Prefectural police have expressed their condolences and reminded skiers to take extra caution when skiing in the backcountry.
