Alabama Executes James Barber for 2001 Murder of Dorothy Epps

James Barber was executed by lethal injection in Alabama on Thursday evening, after being convicted and sentenced to death for the 2001 murder of 75-year-old Dorothy Epps. His execution marks the first in the state since February, when a pause in capital punishment was imposed due to a series of failed lethal injection attempts. Barber had requested to block his execution over fears of harm, but a federal appeals court panel rejected his request.

On Thursday, a powerful tornado ripped through Selma, Alabama, leaving multiple people dead and dozens of homes destroyed. The National Weather Service issued a warning for a “large and extremely dangerous tornado”, and Autauga County Coroner Buster Barber confirmed that “more than four” people lost their lives. Firefighters responded to a structure fire at a warehouse, and crews are currently focused on cutting through downed trees to look for people who may be injured. The community is in mourning for those who lost their lives due to the devastating storm.
