Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana was elected as the 56th speaker of the House in a party-line vote, with all 220 Republicans voting for him. Johnson is a close ally of former President Donald Trump and had led many of the 2020 election challenges, including an amicus brief signed by more than 100 House Republicans. Johnson is the most ideologically conservative speaker since Newt Gingrich in the 1990s and is now second in line to the presidency.

Washington County Circuit Court Judge Andrew Wilkinson was fatally shot in a targeted attack outside his home in Hagerstown, Maryland on Friday. The U.S. Marshals Service is now offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Pedro Argote, 49, who is wanted in connection with the killing. Argote has ties to multiple areas outside of Maryland and the Marshals Service is asking anyone with information to contact them.
Donald Trump was fined $5,000 on Friday for violating a partial gag order in his New York civil fraud case, which relates to his failed business venture, Trump University. The order required Trump to remove a post trashing the judge's law clerk on social media, which he failed to do. Judge Arthur Engoron of the New York Supreme Court imposed the fine and reserved the right to hold Trump in contempt and possibly even put the 2024 Republican front-runner in jail if he again violates the limited gag order.
The race for the next Speaker of the House of Representatives has become increasingly competitive, with 25 entrenched GOP lawmakers blocking Rep. Jim Jordan from winning the gavel. Jordan received 194 votes in the third ballot, 21 votes short of the number he needed to be elected. Another round of voting is required, and the outcome is uncertain as the 25 entrenched GOP lawmakers have yet to declare their support for any of the candidates.
