Wildfires in eastern Canada are causing hazardous air quality conditions in the eastern United States, with cities such as New York City and Detroit having some of the worst air quality worldwide. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has released a radar-based analysis showing near-surface smoke over the U.S., and citizens are advised to limit their outdoor activities.
Arthur Williamson of Pontiac was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the brutal slaying of WWJ radio news anchor Jim Matthews and attack on his family in December 2018. His no-contest plea was used as an admission of guilt at sentencing, and Judge James Biernat called him the “embodiment of evil”. The Matthews family released a statement thanking the police, prosecutors, and community for their support.
Michigan State Police have confirmed that the deaths of three Michigan rappers, Armani Kelly, Dante Wicker, and Montoya Givens, were the result of gang violence and not related to music. The bodies were found in an abandoned apartment building in Highland Park on February 2nd, and the police are asking for the public's help in the investigation. On Monday night, a gunman opened fire at Michigan State University, killing three students and wounding five others before taking his own life. The shooter has been identified as 43-year-old Anthony Dwayne McRae, who had previously been arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. The motive for the shooting is still unknown and the university has released a statement expressing their condolences to the victims' families.
