On Friday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan announced federal kidnapping charges against Rashad Maleek Trice, 26, in connection with the death of 2-year-old Wynter Cole-Smith.

The child’s body was found in an alley in Detroit on Wednesday evening, three days after she was reported missing. According to an FBI agent, Wynter’s death “appeared to be strangulation with a pink cell phone charging cord, that was recovered with the body.”

Trice has been charged with federal counts of kidnapping a minor and kidnapping resulting in death. U.S. Attorney Mark Totten said in a statement, “The allegations in this case are heart-wrenching.”

The incident began when Wynter’s mother was assaulted by an ex-boyfriend. Authorities have not released the identity of the ex-boyfriend, but it is believed to be Trice.
