Judge Rules PG&E Will Face Trial for Manslaughter in 2020 California Wildfire

Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) will face trial for manslaughter in Shasta County, California, after a judge ruled Wednesday that there was enough evidence to proceed with 11 felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from a 2020 wildfire that killed four people and burned 88 square miles of land. Prosecutors argued that PG&E’s equipment sparked the fire due to the company's failure to maintain power lines and clear vegetation near its equipment. The trial is expected to begin in the coming months, and PG&E has not yet commented on the judge’s ruling.

RNC Passes Resolution Urging Most Aggressive Anti-Abortion Legislation Possible in Run-Up to 2024 Election

The Republican National Committee (RNC) has welcomed MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell into the fold, despite his baseless claims of election interference. At its winter meeting, the RNC passed a resolution urging Republican members to pass the most aggressive anti-abortion legislation possible in the run-up to 2024, blaming weak midterms performance on candidates not pushing their anti-abortion stances hard enough. The resolution follows a call for a ban on all abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, with no exceptions for rape or incest, and is likely to be a key issue in the 2024 election.

In a recent interview with CNN, Reps. Adam Schiff (D-CA), Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) have accused Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) of attempting to keep them off House committees. The Democrats argue that McCarthy is using his power to cling to his position as speaker, and Rep. Swalwell referred to McCarthy's home area in California as "some Bakersfield B.S." The House is expected to finalize committee assignments in the coming weeks, and it remains to be seen whether the Democrats will be able to reclaim their positions on the House Intelligence Committee.

Steven Horsford (D-Nev.), the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. The invitation is in response to renewed calls for policing and gun control measures following the death of Nichols and a mass shooting in California this month. The State of the Union address will be an opportunity for President Biden to address the nation and Congress on the current state of the country, and the Congressional Black Caucus and the Nichols family hope that his words will bring about meaningful change and justice.
