Hamburger Mary’s Challenges Florida Law Restricting Drag Show Performances in Federal Court

Hamburger Mary's, a popular Florida burger joint, is challenging a new law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in federal court that restricts drag show performances and subjects businesses in violation of the law to liquor license revocation and hefty fines. The lawsuit alleges that the law violates the First Amendment rights of Hamburger Mary's to free expression, and the restaurant is asking the court to halt enforcement of the law until the case is resolved.

Massachusetts Residents Sentenced to Federal Prison for Involvement in Massive Lottery Fraud Scheme

Two Massachusetts residents, Ali Jaafar (63) and his son Yousef Jaafar (29), have been sentenced to federal prison for their involvement in a massive lottery fraud scheme. The Jaafars were part of a "ten-percenting" operation that involved cashing in 14,000 winning lottery tickets over a roughly 10-year period and then lying on their tax returns to cheat the IRS out of about $6 million. Ali Jaafar was sentenced to five years in prison and Yousef Jaafar was sentenced to three years in prison, with their third son Mohamed Jaafar receiving two years of probation. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Boston said that the sentences should serve as a warning to those who engage in similar schemes.

Seven Suspects Arrested in Spain for Racially Abusing Real Madrid Player Vinícius Júnior

Seven people have been arrested in Spain for racially abusing Real Madrid player Vinícius Júnior, with four of the suspects arrested in Madrid for allegedly hanging an effigy of the player off a highway bridge in January and the other three detained in Valencia for alleged abuse during a Spanish league match on Sunday. Real Madrid and the Spanish government have expressed their support for Vinícius, with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez tweeting, “We will not tolerate racism in any form.” The seven suspects are currently in police custody and are awaiting trial.

Russian Court Extends Pre-Trial Detention of American Journalist Evan Gershkovich Until August 30th

American journalist Evan Gershkovich has been wrongfully detained in Russia since March and his pre-trial detention has been extended until August 30th by the Lefortovsky District Court in Moscow. The U.S. State Department and international human rights groups have called for his release, while the Russian Foreign Ministry has accused him of espionage without providing any evidence.

Police Resume Search for Madeleine McCann 16 Years After Disappearance in Portugal’s Algarve Region

Portuguese police, aided by German and British officers, resumed their search for Madeleine McCann on Tuesday, 16 years after her disappearance in Portugal's Algarve region. More than a dozen cars and police vans arrived in the area, and a blue base tent was set up. About 20 to 30 officers, some in uniform, were seen in the area by the Arade dam, using rakes and hoe-like tools to poke and rake the soil. A search dingy was also seen navigating in the Arade dam.

Missouri Man Arrested After Crashing U-Haul Truck into White House Security Barriers with Nazi Flag in Possession

On Monday evening, a U-Haul truck crashed into security barriers around Lafayette Square across the street from the White House. The driver, Sai Varshith Kandula, was arrested and found to be in possession of a Nazi flag and is facing several arrest charges, including threatening to kill, kidnap or inflict harm on a president, vice president or family members. No injuries were reported, and the Secret Service is working with other law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident and urge the public to remain vigilant.

South Carolina Mother Arrested for Allegedly Killing 6-Year-Old Daughter and Attempting to Kill 8-Year-Old Daughter

South Carolina mother Jamie Bradley Brun has been arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder after allegedly killing her 6-year-old daughter and attempting to kill her 8-year-old daughter. The 16-year-old daughter of Brun was able to save her 8-year-old sister from the attempted drowning. Brun is currently being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center and her 8-year-old daughter is being treated for her injuries.

Colorado Settles $19 Million Lawsuit Over Fatal Shooting of 22-Year-Old Man Suffering From Mental Health Crisis

The Glass family have reached a settlement with the state and local governments of Colorado for $19 million, as well as changes to how officers are trained, following the death of their son Christian Glass due to a mental health crisis. The settlement is seen as a victory for the Glass family and a step forward in the effort to reform how authorities respond to people with mental health issues.
