More than 8,700 nurses are prepared to go on strike Monday at 6 am ET if tentative contract agreements are not reached at several New York City hospitals, according to the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA).
Nancy Hagans, President of NYSNA, announced the potential strike at a virtual press conference Saturday morning. Negotiations to keep 10,000 New York City nurses from walking off the job have been ongoing since Friday, January 6th, 2023.
In a statement Saturday, the NYSNA said nurses at BronxCare and The Brooklyn Hospital Center have reached tentative agreements that will improve safe staffing levels and enforcement, increase wages by 7%, 6%, and 5% annually during their three-year contract, and retain their healthcare benefits.
In preparation for the potential strike, some major hospitals have already begun sending ambulances elsewhere and transferring vulnerable patients, such as newborns, to other facilities.
The NYSNA has urged the hospitals to reach an agreement with the nurses to avoid a strike. The union has also called on the public to support the nurses in their fight for fair wages and safe staffing levels.
The outcome of the negotiations will be determined in the coming days. The NYSNA has said that the nurses are prepared to strike if an agreement is not reached.
