Anthropic files for IPO, disclosing rapid growth and heavy losses

Key takeaways:

  • Anthropic plans to list on the Nasdaq as ANT but has not set a share price, share count or valuation.
  • NBC News reported that Anthropic lost $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026 as quarterly revenue grew 1,368% year over year.
  • Anthropic says its cash and sales should cover the next 12 months but warns it may need financing sooner than expected.

Anthropic has made its plans to go public official, unveiling a filing Monday that shows how quickly the maker of the Claude AI chatbot is growing — and how much it is spending to do it.

The company plans to list on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol ANT. It has not set a share price, said how many shares it will sell or given a valuation. The offering could come as early as November and is expected to rank among the largest stock market debuts ever.

Its scale is still uncertain. NBC News reported that the offering could value Anthropic at more than $2 trillion. The BBC also expects its valuation to exceed SpaceX’s, but the outlets gave different figures for that company’s earlier listing: NBC put SpaceX’s June IPO valuation at $2.1 trillion, while the BBC described its initial valuation this summer as roughly $1.8 trillion.

Anthropic’s filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission showed revenue grew 1,368% from a year earlier in the three months ended June 30, 2026, according to NBC News. The cost of cloud services used to run its products rose 300% over the same period. NBC reported that Anthropic lost $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026, compared with a $42 billion net loss for all of 2025.

The company had raised about $141 billion through the end of June and held $112.4 billion in cash, NBC reported. Anthropic said its cash and sales should cover the next 12 months, but warned that infrastructure costs and other factors could affect future growth: “We may be required to seek additional financing sooner than we currently anticipate.” Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are leading the offering, according to NBC.

Anthropic cast the opportunity in broad terms. “We believe the diffusion of AI through the global economy represents one of the largest opportunities in history to improve how humans live and work, and it is just beginning,” the company said in its filing, according to CBS News.

The debut will test investor demand for Anthropic and for the companies building the data centers, chips and other infrastructure behind AI services. CBS reported that rival OpenAI filed confidentially to go public just over a week after Anthropic did so in June. The BBC said OpenAI’s listing is expected early next year, citing a person familiar with its plans.

The filings also come amid questions about AI’s financial returns and safety. “Despite massive investments and widespread hype around artificial intelligence, the technology has delivered zero financial payoff to corporate America outside of tech,” Apollo Global Management chief economist Torsten Slok said, according to NBC.

Anthropic warned investors about risks involving safety, computing infrastructure and uncertain regulation. Its filing said advanced AI systems could pose “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity” without appropriate safeguards, oversight and security. The BBC reported that cybersecurity and other breaches involving AI agents occurred after Anthropic and OpenAI decided to pursue public listings, while current and former employees of the companies have raised concerns about possible future harms.
