A man was shot and killed Saturday during a dispute at a Manhattan subway station, and police are searching for the person who fled after the shooting.

Officers responded to reports of gunfire at the 53rd Street–Seventh Avenue station in the Theater District at about 12:21 p.m., according to the New York Police Department. The victim was struck once in the chest. Emergency responders took him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was pronounced dead at 1:06 p.m., NBC News reported.

Police have not released the victim’s name pending notification of his family. NBC News reported that authorities described him as “possibly” in his 30s; an NYPD statement cited by The Guardian described him as a man in his 30s.

The NYPD said the suspect approached the man on the northbound E train platform, displayed a firearm and shot him before fleeing on foot. At a news conference, however, police said a dispute between two men had moved from the platform onto a train and then back to the platform. Investigators were still determining exactly where the shot was fired, NBC News reported.

Police said the shooting was not a random act. No one else was reported hurt. “It is fortunate nobody outside the fight was hurt,” Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chief Security Officer Michael Kemper said, according to NBC News. The person responsible “should face maximum consequences from the justice system,” he added.

The NYPD released surveillance images of the person it is seeking, The Guardian reported. The images show a man wearing a red tracksuit, black vest and black face mask and carrying a backpack. Police said he fled on foot, heading north on Seventh Avenue. He is wanted for homicide in the Midtown North Precinct and Transit District 1, according to The Guardian.

The station serves a Midtown area crowded with tourists and theatergoers. Yellow police tape blocked its Seventh Avenue entrance Saturday afternoon, NBC News reported.

The investigation remains ongoing. Police asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), submit a tip through its website or contact @NYPDTips on X, according to The Guardian.
