A child and an adult were killed Saturday when a vehicle drove onto a soccer field during a game in Wichita, Kansas, police said. Other people were injured at the Stryker Soccer Complex, and the driver was taken into custody.
Aaron Moses, a captain and executive officer with the Wichita Police Department, said two juveniles were inside the vehicle. Police did not release the names or ages of those killed, pending notification of their families, The Guardian reported. The child died at the scene, according to The Guardian.
“This is a tragedy,” Moses said at a news conference.
The Guardian reported that multiple people were injured and taken to hospitals, though the extent of their injuries was unknown. CBS News said it was unclear how many people had been injured. Neither report gave a confirmed injury count.
Moses said he did not know how fast the vehicle was traveling or how it got onto the field. Wichita police set up a portal for people to submit video evidence of the incident, according to The Guardian.
A witness told local news station KWCH that a black pickup truck was seen “plowing through the youth soccer fields,” The Guardian reported. The witness said the truck struck multiple people before stopping 100 to 200 yards farther down the fields. The witness also reported seeing dozens of emergency responders giving aid and CPR to victims. Those details came from the witness’s account, not from police.
The City of Wichita said all events at the soccer complex have been canceled until further notice. Officials are investigating what happened.
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu addressed the incident in a social media post. “I’m heartbroken by reports of a tragic incident at Stryker Sports Complex,” she wrote. “My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, especially the children and families involved.”
