PepsiCo has recalled about 122,000 cases of Gatorade sold in 37 U.S. states because the drinks contain artificial dyes that were not declared, according to a notice from the Food and Drug Administration.
The recall covers cases containing 28-ounce bottles of Gatorade Lemon Lime, Gatorade Lemon Lime Zero, Gatorade Orange and Gatorade Orange Zero. The FDA identified the undeclared dyes as Yellow No. 6 and/or Yellow No. 5, which affect the drinks’ color. The Guardian reported that the notice cited the dyes as a concern for people who may be sensitive to them.
PepsiCo initiated the voluntary recall on Sept. 25. On Oct. 2, the FDA updated it to a Class II recall. That classification means use of or exposure to the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” or that the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote, according to the agency’s definition.
The affected cases were sold in Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.
The FDA notice identifies the recall as H-0009-2027. PepsiCo did not immediately respond to requests for comment reported by CBS News and The Guardian. CBS News said it was not known whether customers who bought the recalled drinks were eligible for refunds.
