White House launches Trump TV amid press pool dispute

President Donald Trump launched a 24-hour White House-run YouTube channel on Monday as a dispute with major news organizations escalated into lawsuits, coverage suspensions and a wider fight over access to the president.

The channel, called “Trump TV: The Essentials Station,” is an online video stream rather than a conventional television network. It has no anchors, reporters or original journalism. The White House said it would feature “top past moments, announcements, and the latest and greatest from the administration all in one place.”

The launch followed Trump’s Friday decision to bar CNN, MS NOW, formerly MSNBC, and Politico from reporting from the White House. The president accused the outlets on Truth Social of spreading “fake news” and said they “constantly write or report fiction or lies” about his administration, Al Jazeera reported. He did not provide examples.

On Monday, the banned outlets sued the Trump administration, saying the move violated their First Amendment rights. Trump responded on Truth Social by criticizing the “fake news people” and saying “the Oval Office … should be treated with Decorum, Respect, and Dignity, not defiled by Third Rate Clowns.” He added: “No matter how GREAT my Achievements, they trivialise and demean.”

The White House television pool is made up of ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC, which take turns filming the president and sharing live feeds with other outlets. When the White House blocked CNN from the rotation on Monday, the other four networks refused to replace it, according to Al Jazeera. Other news organizations also protested: The Associated Press joined The Washington Post and The New York Times in declining to publish White House pool photographs of presidential events that day.

With no television press pool present, a White House-produced stream showed Trump opening a new helipad at the White House. The Guardian reported that his remarks were inaudible because of the helicopter behind him. Al Jazeera reported that Newsmax broadcast live visuals of a White House ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Trump, surrounded by workers in hard hats and safety vests, but without audio.

Trump defended his actions in another Truth Social post, writing: “The White House is not instituting an assault on the Free Press, something which I cherish. It is instituting an assault on the FAKE NEWS, something that has grown like Cancer.”

Trump TV’s programming on Tuesday included clips of Trump attending a United Kingdom state banquet, footage of Laken Riley’s mother praising Trump as “a man of his word,” an 18-month-old clip of Melania Trump at an awards ceremony and a February 2025 press conference in which Trump spoke about the United States taking over Gaza and absorbing Canada as the 51st state, The Guardian reported.

The channel had more than 3 million subscribers, but live viewer counts hovered around 1,500, according to The Guardian. A minute-long trailer for the service used an electronic version of The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star” by Andrew Spencer and included clips from programs such as Seinfeld, Modern Family, Breaking Bad, Friends, Parks and Recreation and The Office, as well as Family Guy, The Simpsons and SpongeBob SquarePants.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom criticized the channel as “quite literally state-run TV” and “truly autocratic behaviour,” saying Trump was using it to “drown out the fact that he and his corrupt administration are failing.”

Trump has previously sought to bypass traditional news outlets through Truth Social and has clashed with organizations including The Associated Press, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the BBC and ABC, according to Al Jazeera.
