Trump to Open Great American State Fair After Artist Withdrawals

President Donald Trump will open the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C., on June 24, marking the start of a series of events celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. The event is organized by Freedom 250, a public-private partnership created following a Trump executive order, which has planned concerts and other attractions on the National Mall from June 24 to July 10.

Several musical acts, including Morris Day and the Time, Young MC, Martina McBride, the Commodores, and Bret Michaels, have withdrawn from the lineup, citing concerns about the event’s political nature. Despite these cancellations, artists such as Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli, Vanilla Ice, C+C Music Factory rapper Freedom Williams, and Flo Rida remain scheduled to perform.

Danielle Alvarez, a spokesperson for Freedom 250, described the fair as “a World’s Fair celebrating the people, traditions, innovations, and spirit that make America the greatest nation on Earth.” She outlined that the event will include state exhibits, industry displays, family-friendly attractions, movie screenings, musical performances, military ensembles, flyovers, and a Ferris wheel on the National Mall.

In response to the artist cancellations, Trump posted on Truth Social that he was considering hosting an “America is Back” rally at the fair, where he would deliver a major speech to rally the country forward. He wrote, “I understand Artists are getting ‘the yips’ having to do with their performance … so I am thinking about bringing the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World, the man who gets much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime, and he does so without a guitar, the man who loves our Country more than anyone else, and the man who some say is the Greatest President in History (THE GOAT!), DONALD J. TRUMP, to take the place of these highly paid, Third Rate ‘Artists,’ and give a major speech, rallying the Country forward like I have done ever since being President!”

Freedom 250 officials have denied that the event is political, emphasizing that the organization is nonpartisan and focused solely on celebrating America’s semiquincentennial. Alvarez stated, “From the outset, our work has reflected the unifying spirit of this moment.”

The Great American State Fair is one of several events sponsored by Freedom 250 this summer, including the FIFA World Cup 2026 Fan Zone in June, the Salute to America 250 Celebration and Fireworks on July 4, and the Patriot Games national fitness competition in August.

The event has drawn attention to the existence of two separate organizations commemorating the 250th anniversary: Freedom 250, created following a Trump executive order, and America250, established by Congress about a decade ago to plan national celebrations. This distinction has led to some confusion about the official nature of the semiquincentennial celebrations.
