Key takeaways:

  • DNC Chair Ken Martin released the 192-page 2024 election autopsy after months of withholding it, citing the report's poor quality and lack of source material.
  • The report criticizes underfunded state parties, declining voter registration, and Democrats' failure to listen to all voters, contributing to Republican gains.
  • The DNC annotated the report to highlight factual errors and unsupported claims, emphasizing that it does not reflect the party's verified views.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) on Thursday released a long-awaited autopsy report on the 2024 election, a document that had been withheld for months amid internal debate and public pressure. DNC Chair Ken Martin apologized for the delay and acknowledged the report’s shortcomings, saying it “does not meet my standards” but emphasizing the importance of transparency.

Martin explained that when he commissioned the review after the 2024 election, he sought an honest and actionable analysis to help the party move forward. However, upon receiving the report late last year, he found it “wasn’t ready for primetime — not even close.” The report lacked source material, including interview transcripts and notes, which prevented the DNC from verifying many of its claims and would have required starting the review process over from scratch.

“I could not in good faith put the DNC’s stamp of approval on the report that was produced,” Martin said. He initially withheld the report to avoid creating a distraction following the party’s significant wins in the 2024 elections, but admitted that decision backfired, creating an even larger distraction. “For that, I sincerely apologize.”

The 192-page document, first published by CNN, includes a disclaimer on every page stating it reflects the views of the author, not the DNC, which was not provided with the underlying sourcing or data to verify many assertions. The report, authored by Democratic strategist Paul Rivera, who was not paid for the work, contains a broad historical overview of American politics since 2008, fundraising and spending data, and a detailed analysis of what went wrong for Democrats in 2024.

Key findings include underfunded state parties, declines in voter registration, and a “persistent inability or unwillingness to listen to all voters,” which the report says has allowed Republicans to gain ground. It also criticizes Democrats for relying too heavily on Republicans nominating “deeply flawed candidates” and stresses that regaining voter trust will require a comprehensive, multi-cycle strategy.

The report has drawn sharp annotations from the DNC, highlighting factual errors such as incorrect election results and questioning unsupported claims. For example, the report’s assertion that “the national campaign did not effectively drive Trump’s negatives, and the White House did not effectively support Vice President Harris over three and half years” is marked with “No evidence provided for these claims.”

The release comes amid growing calls from party members and liberal groups like Roots Action, who flooded DNC members with thousands of emails demanding transparency. Former Vice President Kamala Harris also reportedly supported a public release of the report after her 2024 campaign loss.

Chris Korge, DNC finance chair, defended Martin’s decision to release the report despite its flaws, saying, “We are literally a few months away from the midterm elections and this distraction needs to finally go away.”

The autopsy release arrives as Democrats face internal divisions ahead of what many anticipate could be a pivotal midterm election year. Recent primary results, such as progressive Chris Rabb’s victory in Pennsylvania’s 3rd District, underscore ongoing shifts within the party.
