Key takeaways:

  • Keisha Lance Bottoms won the Georgia Democratic governor primary with more than 50% of the vote, avoiding a runoff.
  • Bottoms served as Atlanta mayor from 2018 to 2022 and later as a senior adviser in the Biden administration.
  • Republican Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and healthcare executive Rick Jackson will compete in a June runoff to determine the GOP nominee.

Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has secured the Democratic nomination for Georgia governor by winning the primary with more than 50% of the vote, NBC News and CBS News project. This decisive victory allows her to avoid a runoff and advance directly to the November general election. Bottoms emerged from a crowded field that included former DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond, former state Sen. Jason Esteves, and former Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, who switched from the Republican to the Democratic Party.

Bottoms, who served as Atlanta’s mayor from 2018 to 2022 and later as a senior adviser in the Biden administration, was the clear favorite throughout the primary. She received a key endorsement from former President Joe Biden in the final weeks of the race. Known for her focus on voting rights, healthcare access, economic equity, and defending Democratic gains in Georgia, Bottoms emphasized her experience confronting political challenges. “Who I am is a battle-tested leader, and what I’ve been saying to people across the state is, I know what it’s like to go into battle,” she said. “I know what it’s like to go up against Donald Trump. I know what it’s like not to back down against Donald Trump.”

Bottoms is the only Black woman in the race and has strong name recognition among Georgia Democratic voters. Her campaign also highlighted plans to exempt teachers from state income taxes and to address affordable housing by targeting companies that rent large numbers of single-family homes.

Her Republican opponent in the November election remains uncertain. Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and billionaire healthcare executive Rick Jackson advanced to a June runoff in the Republican primary, according to NBC News. Georgia has leaned Republican at the state level for decades, with no Democrat elected governor since 1998. In recent gubernatorial races, Democrat Stacey Abrams came close to winning in 2018 but lost to Brian Kemp, who defeated her again in 2022 by a wider margin.

Republican candidates have already begun to criticize Bottoms for her handling of crime, disorder, and the COVID-19 pandemic during her tenure as Atlanta mayor. Some have referenced her decision not to seek reelection in their campaign ads even before the primary concluded.

As Georgia remains a key battleground state, the upcoming general election will test Bottoms’ ability to translate her primary success into a statewide victory.
