A family participating in an Easter egg hunt discovered human remains Sunday afternoon in Long Beach’s De Forest Park, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities. The discovery occurred near a walking trail in the roughly 50-acre park, which features a river parkway, trails, and freshwater wetlands.

Long Beach police responded to the 5900 block of De Forest Avenue around 5 p.m. after being alerted to the find. Officers confirmed Monday afternoon that the remains were human. A spokeswoman for the Long Beach Police Department, Andrea Moran, said the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting the investigation.

Family members, speaking off-camera to CBS LA, described finding what appeared to be the skull and other bones of a small child amid their holiday tradition. Aerial footage showed brightly colored Easter eggs scattered near a partially excavated skull on the ground, with officers covering the site with a canopy.

Marc Zaldana, a passerby who encountered the children shortly after the discovery, told CBS LA, “At first we saw the family there, doing like an Easter egg hunt, but they were freaking out a little bit. I can only imagine, like for them, finding a dead, another kid. Must be tragic for them.”

Police maintained that details would remain limited as the investigation continues. Officers were still present at the scene late Sunday evening. The park is located about 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.
