Human remains, including a skull believed to be of a small child, were found during an Easter egg hunt in Long Beach’s De Forest Park, triggering an investigation by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Long Beach Unified School District has reached a $13 million settlement agreement with the family of Manuela “Mona” Rodriguez, who was fatally shot by a Millikan High School safety officer in September 2021. Omar Rodriguez, Manuela's brother, said that this is step one of accountability. The school safety officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, and the family's attorneys are continuing to seek justice for Manuela and her son.
