One person was killed Monday in a shooting near a mosque in Columbus, Ohio, but police said the mosque was not the target.
“We want to make it clear this was not an attack on the mosque,” Sgt. James Fuqua said. According to Al Jazeera, Fuqua said the shooting stemmed from a dispute at an apartment building at the same location as the mosque.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives initially said its agents were responding to a reported shooting at a mosque in the 2200 block of Albert Avenue. Local police later clarified that the shooting happened near the building, not at it.
An event was taking place at the mosque at the time, CBS News reported. The mosque is northeast of downtown Columbus, in an area that also has a cluster of two-story apartment buildings.
CBS News reported that police, neighborhood officials and the mosque did not immediately respond to phone messages seeking further information.
