Key takeaways:

  • The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. in Marble Hill; the NYPD said it was not involved.
  • The injured man was taken to a hospital with injuries the NYPD said were not life-threatening.
  • Mayor Zohran Mamdani said early reports placed an unharmed 5-year-old child in the man’s car when agents fired multiple rounds.

An immigration agent shot a man in New York City’s Marble Hill neighborhood Thursday afternoon, sending him to a hospital and prompting calls from city and state leaders for a full account of what happened.

The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. near West 225th Street and Marble Hill Avenue, according to CBS News. The New York Police Department said the man was conscious when he was taken to a hospital and that his injuries were not considered life-threatening. The department said its officers were not involved in the shooting.

The circumstances leading up to the gunfire remained unclear. Preliminary information indicated that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were trying to take someone into custody when they shot another person who was not the focus of the arrest, law enforcement sources told CBS News.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said early reports indicated that agents had surrounded the man and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. The child was not physically injured, he said. Those details were based on early reports, and authorities had not publicly provided a full account of the encounter.

“This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation,” Mamdani wrote on X. He said he had called President Donald Trump and would demand, when they spoke, an end to all ICE enforcement actions in the city. “Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery,” the mayor wrote.

Video from the scene showed numerous law enforcement personnel and a gray vehicle with a bullet hole in its windshield, CBS News reported. The Guardian, citing the New York Times, reported that witness video appeared to show several agents in the street afterward, including one who was armed and another restraining a man on the ground.

An FBI official said the bureau’s evidence response team was going to the scene to assist investigators from the Department of Homeland Security, ICE’s parent agency, according to CBS News. DHS did not immediately respond to a Thursday evening inquiry from The Guardian.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said she had been briefed on the shooting. “We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident,” she wrote on social media. “New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.”

City Council Speaker Julie Menin also called for a transparent account without delay. She said she was concerned about the fear and uncertainty the shooting could bring to immigrant communities as they awaited answers.

Authorities continued to investigate. At least 30 shootings have involved DHS officers during the second Trump administration, some of them fatal, according to a CBS News analysis.
