Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce married Friday at Madison Square Garden in New York, turning one of the city’s busiest areas into a tightly guarded, star-filled wedding venue as fans crowded the surrounding blocks for a glimpse of the couple and their guests.

Swift’s longtime publicist, Tree Paine, confirmed to the BBC that the pop star and the American football player wed in New York City. The ceremony was officiated by comedian Adam Sandler, the BBC reported.

The couple wore Christian Dior for the ceremony, according to Paine. She said the wedding looks were designed by Jonathan Anderson, creative director of Dior Women’s, Men’s and Haute Couture Collections, in close collaboration with Swift and Kelce. “This is the designer’s first couture wedding dress for a world-renowned celebrity,” Paine said in a statement. Their shoes were custom made by Christian Louboutin, and Swift wore Cartier jewelry.

The couple did not have bridesmaids or groomsmen. Swift’s brother, Austin Swift, served as her Man of Honor, while Kelce’s brother, retired American football player Jason Kelce, was the groom’s Best Man.

Madison Square Garden marked the occasion with large signs reading “JUST&T MARRIED,” a nod to Taylor and Travis. The Guardian also reported that the couple were married in a star-studded ceremony at the arena.

The two-day celebration began Thursday with a smaller gathering described in a city permit as a “pre-party.” About 100 people were reported to have attended. Guests arriving Thursday included actress Lena Dunham and Swift collaborator Jack Antonoff, according to the BBC.

By Friday, the event had grown much larger. A tent outside the arena doubled in size from the previous day, and a stream of blacked-out SUVs moved through the structure to shield guests from cameras and crowds. Crews installed curtains and gazebos around the sports arena, while police closed streets around the venue to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Temperatures reached 37C, or 98.6F.

Actors Hugh Grant, Ethan Hawke and Jason Sudeikis, singer Benson Boone, model Gigi Hadid and actor Bradley Cooper were among those spotted. Actress Dakota Johnson and television presenter Graham Norton were also photographed, along with several members of Kelce’s football team. Some guests arrived in plain view; others exited vehicles under the large tent.

Outside, fans in Swift merchandise filled the blocks around the arena. Some sang Swift songs, shouted “we love you Taylor!” and climbed scaffolding to try to see the festivities. Cheers erupted when the “JUST&T MARRIED” signs appeared.

“I knew that she was going to get married in New York but I had no idea where. So I can’t believe it, I’m actually shook and I’m so excited,” fan Tara Rosales told the BBC. “She’s never an inconvenience. Taylor can do whatever she wants.”

Not everyone outside the venue was fully supportive of the disruption. New York resident Rose told the BBC it was “sort of absurd” that the couple shut down busy streets, though she said she expected the ceremony to be beautiful “because it’s Taylor Swift.” She added: “I hope it’s a beautiful wedding…but I think they should do it somewhere that’s less inconveniencing to general populace of New York City.”

The BBC reported that planning experts estimated the couple likely spent tens of millions of dollars to rent the arena. Ahead of the festivities, Swift and Kelce donated $26 million to more than 20 charities, though they made no mention of a wedding.

Pop culture critic Kristen Meinzer told the BBC the couple’s appeal reflects the cultural reach of music and football. “We worship at the throne of music and football, these are all the things we love in America married together,” she said.
