A gunman was barricaded inside a building in Midland, Texas, on Friday morning after a shooting that killed at least one person and left 11 known victims, city officials said.
Police responded to an active shooter incident in the 4600 block of West Wall Street and heard “gunfire coming from the building,” officials said. The city said the scene was quickly secured and the surrounding area cleared, but efforts to end the standoff were still underway.
Mayor Lori Blong said at a news conference that the suspect was “contained” after authorities established a perimeter. She said officials had no confirmed details about the suspect or the victims.
“Our thoughts and prayers are absolutely with the victims, and with their families,” Blong said.
Nine victims were taken to Midland Memorial Hospital, a hospital spokesperson said. Four were undergoing surgery and five were in stable condition, the hospital said.
Midland Police Chief Greg Snow said in a social media post that officers responded to the southwestern part of the city and heard gunfire from a building. “Armored units were deployed, and partner agencies assisted in the response,” Snow said on Facebook. “Efforts to bring the standoff with the shooter to a safe resolution are ongoing.”
The city said SWAT officers and multiple law enforcement agencies were at the scene. Officials asked the public to avoid the area near Industrial Avenue and Wall Street while public safety personnel continued responding.
“We are aware of the ongoing incident near Industrial Avenue and Wall Street,” the city wrote on Facebook. “At this time, public safety personnel are actively responding, and we ask the public to avoid the area until further notice. Our priority is the safety of our residents and first responders.”
Officials said the incident is believed to have started in southeast Midland and moved across south Midland. No additional details about how the shooting unfolded were immediately confirmed.
