Eight children between the ages of 1 and 14 were killed in a mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, early Sunday morning, police said. Authorities reported a total of ten people were shot in the incident, which unfolded across multiple locations in the city.

Shreveport Police responded just after 6 a.m. to reports of a domestic disturbance at a residence on the 300 block of West 79th Street. Police Chief Wayne Smith described the shooting as “domestic in nature” and confirmed that the victims included children and teens. The shootings occurred at two homes on the same block and a third residence in a nearby part of the neighborhood.

Police spokesperson Christopher Bordelon detailed the crime scene as “extensive,” spanning three locations. He explained that the shooting took place on West 79th Street, with a related shooting on Harrison Street, and an adjacent residence where one victim fled after being shot.

Following the shootings, the suspect fled the scene and carjacked a vehicle near the corner of West 79th and Lynnwood. Shreveport police officers pursued the suspect into Bossier Parish, where officers shot and killed the individual during the chase. Authorities believe the suspect acted alone and was the only person who fired shots during the incidents.

Police have not released the suspect’s identity or further details. Bordelon noted that “some of the children” killed were the suspect’s descendants. The motive behind the shootings remains unclear.

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux addressed the community, calling the event “a tragic situation, maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had in Shreveport.” He said city officials are processing the information and that the investigation is ongoing.

No names of the victims or survivors have been released. Police have not provided information about the two individuals who survived the shootings. The situation remains under active investigation.
