Three people were killed and three others were injured in a massive house explosion Saturday afternoon in Northfield Township, Michigan, authorities said.

The single-family home, located in a rural area of the Whitmore Lake neighborhood, was destroyed save for its basement, according to police and reporting from NBC affiliate WDIV of Detroit. Lt. David Powell of Northfield Township police said three people were dead at the scene and three survivors were rushed to medical facilities in unknown condition Saturday afternoon.

More information about the victims, including their ages and relationship to each other, was still being determined, Powell said during an evening news conference. The explosion happened on Winters Lane and could be heard in Jackson, according to Northfield Township police Lt. Dave Powell. No nearby homes were damaged, Powell said.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Northfield Township Police Department at 734-449-9911.

The tragedy has left the community in shock. “It’s a tragedy,” said neighbor Steve Smith. “It’s a tragedy for the families, for the people who were involved. It’s just a tragedy.”
