Jeff Roe, a seasoned GOP operative and the architect of the ground game operation in Iowa for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, announced his departure from the Never Back Down super PAC on Saturday night. Roe’s decision came in response to a Washington Post story that contained a statement from the PAC’s new chairman, Scott Wagner, that was critical of some former employees.

In a statement posted to X, Roe said, “I cannot in good conscience stay affiliated with Never Back Down given the statements in the Washington Post today. They are not true and an unwanted distraction at a critical time for Governor DeSantis.”

The Washington Post story detailed the long-running tensions between DeSantis’ campaign team and the super PAC, and reported that Roe was the highest profile staffer to leave the PAC in recent weeks. According to the report, several top officials were fired following Wagner’s arrival due to mismanagement and conduct issues, including numerous unauthorized leaks containing false information.

Dan Eberhart, a DeSantis donor, told the Post, “Roe has delivered stunning victories in the past but this doesn’t seem to be his time.”

Roe’s departure from the Never Back Down super PAC comes at a critical time for DeSantis, as the governor is up for re-election in 2022. It remains to be seen how the PAC’s new leadership will affect the governor’s chances in the upcoming election.
