Search Team Investigates Deadly U.S. Osprey Air Crash in Japan

Early Monday morning, the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command confirmed that a search team investigating the deadly U.S. Osprey air crash in the sea off Japan last week had found wreckage and the remains of missing crew members.

The crash occurred on November 29th, when an Osprey CV-22B tiltrotor aircraft went missing near the island of Yakushima. A combined Japanese and United States team of divers located the main fuselage of the aircraft, along with remains. The submerged wreckage, which includes the cockpit of the tilt-rotor aircraft, contains the bodies of five of the eight crew members who were on board.

The Japanese Coast Guard reported last week that one person was recovered unconscious from the water and was later confirmed dead, leaving seven still unaccounted for. The search for the remaining two crew members is ongoing.

The Osprey is a hybrid aircraft that combines features of a helicopter and an airplane. It is used by the U.S. military for transport and special operations. After the crash, Japan’s defense minister asked the U.S. to ground all Osprey aircraft in the country until the cause of the accident is determined.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The U.S. military has expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and said it will continue to provide support to them.
