A Republican senator has raised questions about a Trump supporter currently serving four years in federal prison, suggesting that the individual may be an undercover federal agent.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) of the Senate Judiciary Committee shared a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, over the weekend that suggested an individual seen in one of the videos released by House Speaker Mike Johnson from the Jan. 6 Capitol riot was an undercover federal agent. The post was shared by another Jan. 6 skeptic.

Lee said he planned to ask FBI Director Christopher Wray about the image at the next oversight hearing. The image was of a man who was convicted of storming the Capitol and entering the office of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calf.).

The FBI has not yet responded to Lee’s inquiry, and it is unclear if the agency is investigating the matter.

The Capitol riot, which was incited by former President Donald Trump, resulted in five deaths and multiple injuries. Hundreds of people have been arrested in connection with the riot.

Lee’s suggestion that the individual in the video may be an undercover federal agent has been met with criticism from some who believe the senator is attempting to downplay the severity of the incident.

The FBI has not yet commented on the matter, and it is unclear if the agency is investigating the suggestion. It remains to be seen if Lee’s inquiry will lead to any further investigation.
