Rich Moore, a 71-year-old resident of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, was found dead late last month near Blackhead Peak in southwestern Colorado. Moore had been missing since Aug. 19, when he failed to return from a planned summit of the 12,500-foot mountain.

The Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office, along with search and rescue groups from across the region, had spent nearly 2,000 hours searching for Moore. The search included aerial, ground and K9 teams. On Oct. 30, a hunter in the area stumbled across Moore’s remains and alerted the Sheriff’s Office, noting a white Jack Russell terrier was with him.

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Moore’s body was found with his dog, alive at his side. The dog was taken to a local veterinarian for a checkup and is now in the care of Moore’s family.

Moore’s death is being investigated by the Archuleta County Coroner’s Office. The cause of death has not yet been determined. Moore’s family has asked for privacy during this difficult time.
