Gwyneth Paltrow is remembering her pre-fame romance with Matthew Perry, who passed away this weekend. The “Shakespeare in Love” actor and Goop founder shared a sweet memory of her “magical summer” with Perry in 1993, roughly a year before “Friends” debuted.

Paltrow, 51, shared a photo of a younger Perry on Instagram and wrote about a “magical summer” they spent together early in their careers. She said the two met in 1993 at the Williamstown Theater Festival in Massachusetts, where they spent “most of the summer doing plays.”

“We drove out to swim in creeks, had beers in the local college bar, kissed in a field of long grass,” Paltrow wrote. “It was a magical summer.”

At the time, Paltrow recalled, Perry had already filmed the pilot episode of “Friends” at Warner Bros. studios. She added that she was “so sad” to hear of his passing, and that he was “a truly kind and precious soul.”

Perry’s “Friends” co-star, Jennifer Aniston, also paid tribute to him on Instagram, writing that he was “our friend.” She added that he was “a part of us, and will remain so.”

The actor’s cause of death has yet to be revealed. Perry was 51 years old.
