The Coast Guard is responding to a mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine that left 18 people dead late Wednesday night. The suspect, Robert Card, 40, was a firearms instructor and longtime member of the Army Reserve.

According to Katie Card, who is married to Robert’s brother, Robert had been experiencing an “acute” mental health episode for the past couple of months. She said that he had recently been fitted for high-powered hearing aids and was hearing voices that were saying “horrible” things about him.

Bowdoin College, an area college that is closed today amid shelter-in-place advisories, said in an emergency bulletin that the vehicle registered to Card, a white Subaru Outback, was “abandoned” by a boat dock. The Coast Guard has deployed resources to help search for Card.

A law enforcement source told CBS News that the vehicle was found near a boat launch. Card has been charged with eight counts of murder, officials said this morning. The investigation is ongoing.
