A bear has caused a stir at the St. Regis Aspen Resort in Colorado after it broke into the hotel’s kitchen and attacked a security guard.

The incident happened late Monday night when the guard was investigating reports of a bear roaming the resort’s facilities. As the guard rounded a corner in the kitchen, he was surprised by the bear, which then attacked him, swiping at him and knocking him down to the ground.

The guard managed to escape and call 911, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officers arrived at the resort early Tuesday. They determined that the bear had entered the hotel through a series of doors near the courtyard.

The security guard was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for scratches to his back and was released Tuesday. CPW said that the bear was likely looking for pre-hibernation snacks.

Officials are reminding people to be aware of their surroundings and to take precautions when outdoors, as bears are increasingly active this time of year. They also advise people to keep their distance from bears and to never feed them.
