BRUSSELS (AP) – Two Swedes were killed in a shooting late Monday in central Brussels, police said, prompting Belgium’s Prime Minister Alexander De Croo to suggest the attack was linked to terrorism and convene an emergency meeting of top Cabinet ministers.

The OCAD anti-terror center said that the terror alert for the capital was raised to its highest level, and the alert for the rest of the country was raised to its second-highest level. Laura Demullier of the OCAD center said in an interview that the highest priority for authorities now was to get thousands of football fans attending the Belgium-Sweden soccer match safely out of the stadium where the match had been abandoned halfway through.

De Croo offered his condolences to Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying, “As close partners the fight against terrorism is a joint one.”

The shooting occurred in the center of Brussels, where police have cordoned off the area. No suspects have been identified yet, and the motive for the attack is still unknown.

The Belgian government has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
