Rep. John Duarte (R-Calif.) is calling for the House of Representatives to reelect former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy as speaker this week in order to approve military aid to Israel as soon as possible.

Duarte expressed fear that Israel could run short on artillery in the midst of attacks by Hamas that began over the weekend and have so far resulted in over 1,500 deaths and thousands of injuries.

In an interview on “Fox & Friends”, Duarte said that McCarthy’s commitment to Israel makes him the ideal candidate to return as speaker of the House, even though he was just voted out last week.

McCarthy has not ruled out another bid for the job, telling reporters Monday, “I’ll let the conference see who unites them.” Duarte also suggested that Republicans would have to take action to prevent the the next speaker from being ousted by such a small percentage of the conference.

Duarte criticized the House for dilly-dallying around with a leadership struggle when one of their strongest allies in the world is under attack. He said that without an elected speaker, the House would not be able to vote on a funding package.

Eight of the 221 Republicans currently in the House joined all 212 Democrats to remove McCarthy from the speakership. It remains to be seen if McCarthy will be reelected and if the House will be able to approve military aid to Israel in time.
