On Monday, the National Weather Service in San Antonio posted a forecast with temperatures as high as 94 degrees, warning of “mainly dry and warm conditions”. Unfortunately, this weather proved to be too much for a 2-month-old baby, who was left in a hot car for three hours by a Texas sheriff’s deputy.

The incident occurred at around 10 a.m., when the deputy, 31-year-old Antonio Almaraz, returned home from a pediatrics appointment. Almaraz, who was hired in February and was on probation at the time, allegedly left the infant in his parked car and did not return until 1 p.m.

At that time, the baby was found unresponsive and was rushed to the hospital, where they remain in critical condition. Almaraz was arrested shortly after and has since been fired from his position as a sheriff’s deputy.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on the incident, saying that they are “deeply saddened by this tragedy” and that they are “committed to ensuring justice is served”.

The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of leaving children in hot cars, even for a short period of time. The National Weather Service warns that temperatures inside of a car can reach up to 20 degrees higher than the outside temperature, and that leaving a window cracked does not make a difference.
