The Seattle Police Department is under investigation after a body-worn camera captured one of its union leaders making light of the death of a woman who was struck and killed by a police cruiser earlier this year.

The incident occurred on January 23rd when a marked patrol vehicle driven by Officer Kevin Dave struck and killed Jaahnavi Kandula, 23, as she was crossing a street. Officer Daniel Auderer, who is the vice president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, responded to the scene and left his body camera on after the incident.

In the footage released by the Seattle Police Department on Monday, Auderer can be heard calling guild President Mike Solan to report what happened. During the call, Auderer can be heard saying that Kandula “had limited value.”

The city watchdog agency is now investigating the incident and the comments made by Auderer. The Seattle Police Department has released a statement saying that they “do not condone this type of behavior and are committed to holding our officers to the highest standards of professionalism.”

The Seattle Police Officers Guild has also released a statement saying that they “do not condone the comments made by Officer Auderer and are taking this matter very seriously.” They have also said that they are “working with the Seattle Police Department to ensure that all officers are held to the highest standards of professionalism.”
