Heavy rains caused flooding in the Detroit area and other parts of southeastern Michigan on Thursday, leading to road closures and confusion at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

The National Weather Service in Detroit reported that storms dropped over five inches of rain on the region Wednesday night and into Thursday morning. This caused flooding in underground roadways that connect airport terminals, blocking travelers from part of the Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

The heavy rains also caused strong winds of up to 75 mph in Michigan, which downed trees, tore roofs off buildings, and left hundreds of thousands of customers without power on Thursday.

Tragically, a two-vehicle crash Thursday night in Kent County resulted in the death of a woman and two young children. Two other people were injured in the crash. The National Weather Service said Friday that some of the damage may have been caused by two tornadoes.
