Key takeaways:

  • House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said the House of Representatives could open an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden next month if he does not provide personal records.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Tuesday that the House of Representatives could open an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden next month if he does not provide personal records.

McCarthy said that the documents Republicans are seeking include “the bank statements, the credit card statements” that would show whether Biden had taken a bribe. He added that if the documents are provided, there would be no need for an impeachment inquiry.

During a Fox Business interview Tuesday night, McCarthy was asked whether he has made up his mind whether to launch an impeachment inquiry into Biden. He responded that the decision would depend on how the Biden administration responds to the request for documents.

“The thing that holds up whether we’ll do an impeachment inquiry: Provide us the documents we’re asking,” he said. “But if they withhold the documents and fight like they have now to not provide to the American public what they deserve to know, we will move forward.”

It is unclear what documents the Republicans are seeking, as they have not previously said they asked the Biden administration or the Biden family for bank statements. However, the House Oversight Committee is reportedly looking into the Biden family’s financial dealings.

The Biden administration has not yet responded to the request for documents. It remains to be seen whether the documents will be provided, and whether the House will move forward with an impeachment inquiry.
