On Tuesday, a psychologist testified at a hearing to determine if a Michigan high school mass shooter will receive a life prison sentence. The shooter, 17-year-old Ethan Crumbley, killed four students in 2021. The psychologist described Crumbley as a “feral child” who had been deeply neglected by his parents during crucial years and was mentally ill.

The psychologist, Colin King, said Crumbley was experiencing psychosis, a break from reality. To illustrate this, Crumbley’s lawyers played videos from jail showing the teen in deep distress as deputies restrained him while he wailed. In one incident, his head was completely covered with a hood. King said Crumbley was heard asking “Why didn’t you stop it?” and “Stop it, God, why?”

King said Crumbley’s mental illness was a result of his environment and upbringing. Despite this, he predicted that the boy “absolutely” can be rehabilitated. No dates were disclosed for when the hearing will conclude.
